At ICON Martial Arts, we teach more than kicks and forms. Since 1988, we’ve been building confidence and character, guided by the principle of developing “might for right.” At the heart of that are the five tenets of Taekwondo. Students learn them on the first day and keep growing into them for years.
Here’s what each one means, and what it looks like once you leave the mat.
1. Courtesy
Courtesy is respect shown in action: bowing to your instructor, helping a partner up, saying “yes, sir” and “yes, ma’am.” It starts as a habit on the mat and becomes how students treat teachers, family and friends.
At home: kids who practice courtesy in class are quicker to say please and thank you, and to listen the first time.
2. Integrity
Integrity means knowing right from wrong and choosing right, even when no one is watching. In class, that means honest effort on every rep, not just when the instructor walks by.
At home and school: owning up to mistakes, keeping your word, and doing the work instead of cutting corners.
3. Perseverance
Every student hits a form they can’t remember or a kick that won’t go higher. Perseverance is coming back to class and trying again. Each new belt is proof that steady effort pays off.
In life: the same mindset gets students through tough homework, a new job, or a goal that takes months instead of days.
4. Self-Control
Martial arts teach students how to use their strength, and just as importantly, when not to. Self-control means staying calm, controlling your emotions, and using techniques safely and only when needed.
Every day: walking away from a fight, staying focused in class, and thinking before reacting.
5. Indomitable Spirit
Indomitable spirit is the courage to stand up for what’s right and keep going when things get hard. It’s the student who breaks a board on the third try because they refused to quit after the first two.
For life: it’s the confidence to face challenges head-on instead of backing down.
More Than a Martial Art
These five tenets are why parents tell us their kids come home more focused, respectful and confident, and why adults find Taekwondo builds a stronger mind along with a stronger body. Whether your child is 4 or you’re starting at 40, the tenets give every student a foundation to grow on.
See it for yourself. The best way to understand the tenets is to experience them on the mat. Book a free intro at ICON Martial Arts in Tomball, or call or text us at (281) 357-4900.
